Australian Democrats' Statement of Support

THE SENATE
CANBERRA, A.C.T.

STATEMENT OF SUPPORT
for the
FRIENDS OF THE ABC

SAVE THE ABC CONCERT AND RALLY

Melbourne Town Hall, 12 August 1996

We would like to thank the Friends of the ABC for having invited us to attend this concert and rally to celebrate, support and save the ABC. We write this in behalf of all Democrat Senators.

The ABC is an important part of our lives, and obviously of the lives of everyone participating in this evening's important event. It is only with concerts and rallies like these, that we, the taxpaying and consuming public, can have a say in how the Government plans to spend, or rather not to spend, our money.

The ABC is more than a broadcaster. It is a way of life. It is vital and important. It is a solid and capacious organisation. It reflects, reinforces and exemplifies our national identity. It is bold and brave. The ABC is free of the commercial pressures which fetter the other broadcasters. This allows the ABC the scope to produce creative, innovative and intellectual programs which meet the social, cultural and educational needs of all sectors of the community. And it does this consistantly across radio and television.

The ABC is an Australian icon worth fighting for. The Democrats will do everything in our power, especially in the Senate, to stop moves to further downgrade the ABC.
We hope tonight is a success. Good luck!!

Together we can save our ABC.

Yours sincerely,
