PARLIAMENT OF AUSTRALIA - THE SENATE
SENATOR VICKI BOURNE
Senator for New South Wales
Australian Democrats Whip
On the fiftieth anniversary of ABC News, the Australian Democrats have congratulated the Australian Broadcasting Corporation for providing Australia with half a century of outstanding and independent news service.
Senator Vicki Bourne, Broadcasting and Media Spokesperson for the Democrats, described ABC News as a much-loved, respected and trusted national institution, saying:
"No other media organisation in Australia can match the ABC's record when it comes to providing high quality and independent news.
"1 June 1947 was the beginning of a truly independent and unbiased news service which, 50 years later, includes current affairs programs on television and radio, which are broadcast throughout Australia's capital cities, rural, regional and remote areas, and throughout Asia Pacific Region via Radio Australia and Australia Television.
"When it comes to news, and current affairs, the ABC continues to set the industry standard. This is a proud achievement for the ABC and for our nation.
"Like millions of other Australians, I grew up with ABC News. I simply cannot imagine life without it.
"It is a national outrage that funding cuts threaten the ABC's ability to continue to deliver such an important and extensive range of news and current affairs programs.
"My message to the ABC and to every person who has helped deliver 50 years of ABC news: Thank you.
"My message to the Government: keep your hands off our ABC"
