Government Must Act on ABC Board
Friends of the ABC is calling on the Howard Government to match Labor's promise to de-politicise the ABC Board.
“Labor has put on the table its promise to introduce a board appointment system that respects the ABC’s independence and its importance to all Australians,” said Alan Knight, Friends of the ABC National Spokesperson.
“It has committed itself to a way for the stacking and counter-stacking of the ABC Board to end. Now it’s the Government’s turn.”
“For too long there have been appointments to the ABC Board that fulfil neither the criteria of merit nor independence, let alone both.”
“It is time politicians of all political persuasions remembered that governments should not attempt to run the ABC. At law and in spirit the national broadcaster is meant to be independent.”
“John Howard should now follow the lead of the British Conservative government that, over ten years ago, introduced the system on which the Australian Labor Party has based its policy.”
