To: Chief of Staff MEDIA RELEASE Thursday 28th June 2007 Friends of the ABC is celebrating the ABC’s 75th anniversary with activities around Australia on Sunday “The ABC’s future as an independent broadcaster has never been under greater threat,” said Prof Alan Knight, Friends of the ABC national spokesperson. “The broadcaster’s 75th anniversary is a good time to express our appreciation of the way the ABC enriches our lives and the nation. “It is also provides an opportunity to send a message to politicians that Australians everywhere want the ABC to remain commercial-free. The community will not allow it to be privatised - up front, or through the back door. “The public broadcaster was established by a conservative government in 1932, the depths of the depression and a time when governments didn’t have much money. How ironical that it is being starved of funds and pushed down the commercial track in a period of record budget surpluses.” Further comment: For further details on some of the ABC 75th Anniversary Activities around Australia: NSW - FABC joining in with ABC celebrations at ABC Ultimo Qld - 10 am Aunty’s 75th Birthday Picnic in the park at Guyatt Park SA - Stall in a city market Tas - Hobart - 12 noon Happy 75th Birthday Party at Republic Bar & Café Tas - Launceston - 2 pm Happy 75th Birthday Party at Fluid restaurant Vic - 10.30am ABC’s 75th Birthday celebration at Southgate Arts & Leisure Precinct
