Sample Letter #1

The Hon John Howard
Prime Minister
Parliament House
Canberra 2600

Dear Prime Minister

The ABC is Australia's most significant cultural, information, educational and entertainment institution. The Board which governs the ABC does so on behalf of the public of Australia.

I ask your Government to desist from the practice of appointing political colleagues or supporters to the ABC Board. Such action is contrary to the public's interest - to have a well resourced, comprehensive national public broadcaster which is independent from commercial and political influence. It runs counter to the intent of the legislation which provides for the ABC's independence.

All appointments must be based on merit, on the parson's ability and willingness to contribute to and enhance the operations of the ABC. The prerequisite for Board membership must be support for the Charter which governs the ABC, and accordingly, a firm commitment to ensuring the ABC remains an independent and comprehensive national public broadcaster.

Along with many Australians, I share the view that the ABC is one of the most positive influences in Australia today. I strongly urge your Government to honour the commitment it gave prior to its election in 1996 to maintain the ABC. I request the Government reinstate funds cut from the ABC's budget, respect the ABC's independence, and cease efforts to interfere in and undermine our ABC. I look forward to receiving your written response to the matters I have raised.

Yours sincerely
