Tim Lane demonstrates integrity
Increasing commercialization of sport has resulted in the seriously
under-funded ABC being unable to broadcast many major sports events.
Ironically, through its quality reporting, it is the ABC that often
demonstrated the public's interest in particular sports to commercial
broadcasters which had initially shown no interest.
Sport plays a significant part in the lives of many Australians. The
public is entitled to feel secure that in sport, as in other important
areas, it can depend on quality and independent coverage. Indeed, the
ABC's impartial commentary, scrutiny and reports have even greater significance
as sport is reshaped by powerful commercial interests.
Tim Lane's recent actions were not just about whether a commentator
supporting a club might lead to a bit of heightened emotion during the
call of a match. He has shown a genuine concern to ensure a conflict
of commercial, club or media commitments cannot conspire to prevent
the very impartial scrutiny that is the hallmark of his trade.
Tim Lane should be commended for negotiating and adhering to terms
in a contract to ensure the independence of the ABC is not tainted.
He has demonstrated why it is that the public's trust in the integrity
of its national public broadcaster and its staff is not misplaced.
Yours sincerely
