  • Friends of the ABC has two basic objectives:

    • to ensure that the ABC properly performs its functions as a national broadcaster
    • to ensure that the ABC is properly funded and remains independent of government influence, commercial sponsorship and advertising.

  • We do this by accumulating funds for public meetings, advertising and research purposes; by debating such issues as commercial sponsorship, distribution of resources between Sydney HQ and the regions and so forth; and by making representations on these matters to the ABC and to government.
  • We also carry out other mailouts to keep members informed on matters we believe they should know about, but which may not have been fully dealt with in the media.
  • Each year, we undertake projects to advance public debate on broadcasting or to raise public consciousness on matters of importance.
  • We have an elected management committee, to which other members can be co-opted as required. Committee meetings are held at least monthly. Members are welcome to attend meetings by arrangement. This is usually of most interest to country members who may be visiting Melbourne, or to members with particular interest in a topic to be discussed, perhaps with a guest speaker. Volunteers are sought from time to time to assist with the preparation of newsletters for mailing, to set up halls for public meetings and the AGM, or to operate stalls at public events.
  • For the year 2004/2005 annual subscriptions are $30 single, $50 for a household or organisation and $15 (concession for pensioners, students and the unemployed). Our financial year runs from 1 July (when subscriptions fall due) to the following 30 June. Financial members receive a membership card which entitles them to a staff discount of 10% at ABC shops and centres. New members joining in the last quarter of the financial year are credited with membership to the end of the following year.
