Former judge Jim Spigelman to head ABC

James Spigelman AC QC is the first ABC chairman appointed by
the Labor Government under its merit-based assessment
process. Mr Spigelman will take up his appointment, which also has the support of the Opposition, on 1 April.
 

Commercial interests override public interest – Convergence Review

Glen-BorehamThe interim report of the Government’s Convergence Review includes a recommendation that would undermine the ABC’s independence.
It recommends the ABC’s charter be refined to give commercial operators certainty about the ABC’s boundaries. And it proposes that cross-media ownership rules be scrapped.

ABC to retain Australia Network

The saga over Australia’s international television service
has ended. Senator Conroy, Minister for Communications,
has announced that AN will become a permanent ABC service.

program, and disband the national broadcaster’s TV arts unit.
